Understanding climate variability and change

 

 

Tropical intra-seasonal variability (Camille, Catherine)

 

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the tropics. Climate models have persistent difficulties to simulate its characteristics. Why do some models capture it better than others? What processes are key to simulate the MJO?

Leveraging past climate variations (Camille, Sandrine)

 

Climate models exhibit a persistent spread in their projections of regional precipitation changes in the tropics, especially in monsoon regions. How can we assess the credibility of climate models and their precipitation projections? Could we use past climate variations, as recorded by paleoclimatic archives (e.g. ice cores, speleothems...), to test the capacity of models to simulate the regional precipitation responses to global climate changes?

Initiatives

- Adressing these questions is the goal of the ANR project ISOTROPIC.

- Using the CMIP5 archive, we try to make a link between the behavior of models during past changes (e.g. Last Glacial Maximum, Mid Holocene) and future changes. Encouraging results have been found in tropical South America (Schmidt et al 2013).
